Updated: Dec 24, 2021

On a spectacular, weather day, Thursday, September 30, 2021 the Kappa Foundation of Prince George’s County, Incorporated hosted its Inaugural Leon Walker Memorial Golf Classic (LWMGC). The event was held at the luxurious Oak Creek Golf Club in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

The LWMGC attracted 200+ attendees all supporting the foundations cause for this event of raising funds benefiting the youth and senior citizens of Prince George’s County, Maryland. At the onset of development for the Leon Walker Memorial Golf Classic The foundation and its committee determined that this event should not only support our local communities but also raise up in honor Brother Leon Walker’s (Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Alumni - 1984) Achievements both personally and within the fraternity. Brother Walker’s lifelong commitment to the fraternity, foundation, and his private accounting firm, served as the centerpiece for delivering this event and it’s benefits to all residents and participating businesses of Prince George’s County. (Brother Leon Walker was the third African-American in the state of Virginia to receive a CPA license.)

It should not go without mentioning that this inaugural event received an overwhelming amount of support from local business owners such as, Nissan of Bowie, Fresh Green, Carrabba‘s Italian Grill, Lights Over DMV, lighting and landscaping, J.B Jenkins Funeral Home, Sky Zone Trampoline Park, Silver Diner of Woodmore Towne Center, Nando‘s PERi PERi of Woodmore Towne Center, Starbucks of Capitol Heights, BJ’s Restaurant at Bowie Towne Center, Golf Galaxy, Jim Beam Distillery’s, Whip Clean Car Wash of Bowie, MD, ABC Dentistry, N Habit Real Estate, Alexander & Craig Ventures, LLC, City First Bank and countless other commercial and private supporters.

An event of this nature calls for active planning and preparation while creatively dealing with many moving pieces behind the scenes. Under the leadership of Committee Chairman, Brother Virgil Moore III and Co-Chairs Brothers David Torrence and Troy Stewart, along with committee members, Brother Past Polemarchs Joseph Lovett and Michael Pitts, Brothers Marc Buchanan, Karlos Reynolds, Jason Zeigler, Carlton Nettles and Ulyssess Garrett, all of whom played critical roles in solidifying and executing the Classic. For anyone who has ever put together a golf or fundraiser of any sort understands the long-term commitments necessary to successfully activate such an event from start to finish. This group of Kappa men representing the ΚΑΨ Hyattsville/Landover (MD) Chapter, pulled together in harmony and within that good Ole’ Kappa Spirit toiled relentlessly making this event a future staple within the Prince George’s County community.

The event also attracted fraternal dignitaries such as Eastern Province Polemarch, Brother Charles E. Exum Jr., Past Eastern Province Polemarch, Brother Linwood J. Smith, Jr., Maryland State Senators Brother Ronald Watson Jr., and Brother Malcolm Augustine in addition to other celebrities and professional athletes in that of former Washington Football Team Quarterback Jason Campbell. Considering the events success, the committee has already begun it’s planning for 2022. The foundations future goals for the Leon Walker Memorial Golf Classic are to continue elevating and supporting the needs for the youth and senior citizens of Prince George’s County. The foundation is excited to propel this event in perpetuity, as an annual highlight within the community. The event is tentatively slated for mid-September of 2022 at the same location. More details will follow in the coming months. The foundation would like to formally acknowledge the Walker family and it’s continued support along with the entire Prince George’s County community.
